Collectible ornaments inspired by The Met collection. This stylish ornament reinterprets an example of the funky footwear made by Herman Delman (American, 1895–1955). Delman attracted socialites and celebrities to his small custom shop, established on Madison Avenue in 1919, before he shifted his attention to manufacturing. He hired top designers such as Roger Vivier (French, 1913–1998) to create always fashionable and finely crafted shoes boasting the Delman name, and he was a savvy businessman who pioneered the sales tactics of using film stars in his advertisements and partnering with popular clothing stores, including Saks and Bergdorf Goodman. Delman was a notable contributor to the introduction of the platform sole in the late 1930s. The Museum’s playful pair (1937–39) in The Costume Institute features creatively executed splits and cutouts in the wedge. To learn more about the history of The Met Store’s collectible art ornaments and shop other art-inspired designs, read our blog post here.
